Everyone loves a hard worker. Everyone admires a healer. Everyone celebrates the cycle of life.
These thing are true throughout all time. There are also other, more difficult truths to accept. The hard work might be ugly. The healing might look a lot like dying. The cure may even be death. Will the world ever celebrate the cycle of death? They will not.
Thatâs the hard truth about the work I do. Every day, I travel this Earth finding recently departed spirits. I carefully clean their remains and prepare them for the journey they must take. I carry a part of their spirit until it can be joined with the One spirit which unites all living things. I have done this work for eons. I help their energy carry on.
I know my work is looked upon with disgust. The smell of death lingers on me. The very spirits I carry, they also cling, those who come close enough can feel them. They shrink away in disgust.
Dead spirits frighten and revolt the living. Itâs strange to me, as if the spirit itself is tainted by death. It is not, even in death the spirit remains, and that spirit needs a guide.
I am that guide.
This could almost seem like a cursed life, but when I took up my responsibility I was given the deep personal knowledge of how important this work is. If we death doulas fail to reach a spirit in time, they do not remain trapped here on Earth, they do not remain in some purgatory, they travel to neither heaven nor hell. If a spirit is not carried back to the One, they simply cease to exist. Imagine that, knowing that if you ever fail at your task, a spark will flicker out forever. I suppose in many ways, I love life more than any other being. I want every single spark to live on, their own light joining in an energy that flows through every dimension and through all time, the One spirit. It is truly beautiful.
Knowing this makes the drudgery more bearable. Knowing this makes the stares and the disgust that I encounter somehow less painful. I cannot explain to the living how precious they are, I can only carry them. I can only carry on with this dark task which I know truly brings light.
Thatâs how it was that day. I knelt beside pregnant doe as she took her final breath. We were on a country road in a remote little place in central California. The doe looked at me with pain and fear and I murmured reassurances to her as her life faded. I promised I would carry them together, the doe and her child. I promised they would join the One spirit, together, and that her child would not need to be afraid.
Carefully I worked in ceremony, preparing them to cross with me. As with every spirit, as I did this work a part of them joined me. I would forever be connected to the doe and her child.
